Karie Angell Luc/Pioneer PressAt the 5K start line was participant William Steinberg of Highland Park who was in the July 4 parade and remembers the sounds of gunfire.“It sounded like it was some invasion happening in our town,” he recalled. “Honestly, I thought it was small rockets that were dropped at the microphone, but really it was actual gunshots I heard.“Why did it have to be Highland Park?” Steinberg and Sarah Breen of Northbrook participated with their children Jake, 10, a rising fifth grader, and Chase, 8, a rising fourth grader. The Breen family members are regulars on the local racing scene.“This one I made sure to sign up for just because I thought it was really important to be here and to try to help, in any little way, to benefit survivors and victims and everything that happened last year,” Sarah Breen said. “I just thought this was a good way to honor it.” Rep. Brad Schneider D-10th addresses participants at the start line of the Highland Park Strong Half Marathon, 5K and 1 Mile Run on June 4, 2023 in downtown Highland Park. Karie Angell Luc/Pioneer PressWith the Breen children, she said, “We talk about it a lot. They were obviously aware of what was going on last year, and we talked about why we want to run this specific race. I think the benefit is just to be there as a community, and to do what you can.”Jake Breen said he was there to run, “for the people that got shot or hurt. I hope they get better.”Chase Breen said, “This race is special because we’re helping people, the victims that got shot and the survivors, because that was a bad day.”Justin Breen added, “This is way bigger than running. Much bigger.”Breanne Cerna-Wons, 18, of Highland Park and a 2023 graduate of Highland Park High School, performs the national anthem at the start line with fellow high school musicians at the Highland Park Strong Half Marathon, 5K and 1 Mile Run on June 4, 2023 in downtown Highland Park. Inverness Travel is confirmed as the lead corporate sponsor for the Highland Hospice as it takes on the London Landmarks Half Marathon as a charity partner for the first time. The Hospice plans to take a team of ten to London in March 2020 to complete the 13 miles through the heart of central London. Inverness Travel will both arrange and pay for all flights and accommodation for Team Highland Hospice. In addition, Scott Murray, Managing Director of Inverness Travel and parent company Cru Holdings, will also run the half marathon for the Highland Hospice. Scott explains “It’s a privilege to team up with the Highland Hospice, which has supported so many local people over the years. At Inverness Travel, we book trips to London nearly every day of the week, so we are more than happy to take this stress away and let the runners concentrate on completing the route and raising vital money for the Highland Hospice. As for me, I like a challenge! I’ve done a half marathon once before and the London Landmarks Half Marathon will give me the incentive I need to get my running shoes out again!” As well as running the half marathon, each member of Team Highland Hospice will also be raising money in the lead up to the event. Scott is already working on a calendar of events alongside his training schedule. This is likely to include a quiz night following the success of a recent quiz he held for charity Step Up for Sam where £2,000 was raised. Wendy Morgan, Communications Officer for Highland Hospice added “We are so grateful to Scott and the team from Inverness Travel. I too have signed up to run, along with two fellow mums from the Andy Pandy Nursery, Shelagh Kerr and Jackie Carruthers. We were all devastated earlier this year when our sons’ nursery friend Zoe Mackay lost her mum Louise after a battle with cancer. “The care and support this family, and so many others like them, receive from Highland Hospice is my inspiration – and having only ever previously entered a 5K Fun Run, this is certainly going to be a challenge!” The London Landmarks Half Marathon is a closed road, central London run and is the only half marathon to go through both the City of London and City of Westminster. The race starts on Pall Mall, finishes by Downing Street and takes runners past London’s most iconic landmarks including Big Ben, St Paul’s Cathedral, Nelson’s Column, the Gherkin, the Shard, the Tower of London and the London Eye. Team Highland Hospice is made up of Wendy Morgan, Shelagh Kerr, Scott Murray, Jackie Carruthers, Brian Cameron, Marc Wilson, Judith Colligan, David Munro, William Robertson and Chloe Robertson.
